For more than 20 years INERIS has been organising interlaboratory comparisons in various kinds of matrices, in particular in the areas of WATER and AIR.
* Cofrac Accreditation for Interlaboratory Comparisons No. 1-2291, general scope available on www.cofrac.fr and detailed scope available on request.
The Directives 2004/107/EC, 2015/1480 and 2024/2881 of the European Parliament enforce the monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air.
Article 16 from the French law of April 16st, 2021 regarding air quality monitoring and public information imposes "the participation to interlaboratory comparisons (ILCs) on laboratories performing the chemical analyses for the French air quality monitoring networks".
In this aim, Ineris organizes an interlaboratory comparison to satisfy this requirement.
Nevertheless, all laboratories which perform this analysis can participate.
These analytical interlaboratory comparisons (ILCs) "Analysis of samples from stationary source emissions" are organized on the request of Ministry of environment. Until 2010, participation in these analytical ILCs has been dedicated to analytical laboratories carrying out analysis of media used for controls of atmospheric emissions of industrial plants in France for regulatory purposes, for which an approval from the ministry is necessary. Since 2011, Ineris has extended the participation to any laboratory willing to take part.
The following parameters will be studied:
- HCl, HF, SO2, NH3, Metals, Dust by gravimetry (filter and rinsing solution) and PAHs.
Program 2026
June 2026 : Interlaboratory comparisons "Measurements of stationary source emissions on the test bench".
Inter-laboratory comparisons (ILC) organized at the request of the French Ministry in charge of Ecology, for the attention of approved bodies or those wishing to obtain approval for the control of atmospheric emissions from classified installations, will take place on the Ineris test bench. ILC registration is also open to non-approved laboratories.
In 2026, the ILC will cover manual method for measuring dust concentration according to standard EN 13284-1.
Laboratories must implement two independent sampling lines in order to assess inter-laboratory repeatability variances and reproducibility at different concentration levels. The CIL requires participants to be present at the Ineris site for 3 days.
Ineris proposes to organize an Inter-Laboratory Comparison relating to the analysis of air in working environments. This Inter-Laboratory Comparison will allow accredited laboratories to meet the requirement to monitor their proficiency. Nevertheless, laboratories using same methods concerning this kind of analysis can participate.
The following parameters are proposed ( Subject to a sufficient number of registered participants ):
- Inorganic acids (HF, HBr, HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, H3PO4),
- Ammonia (NH3),
- Metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb),
- Mercury (Hg),
- BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes),
- Methanol,
- Aldehydes (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde),
Recent regulatory developments concerning the monitoring of per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in atmospheric emissions have led Ineris to organize an inter-laboratory comparison (ILC) on the 49 semi-volatile PFAS substances listed in the french standard XP X43-126 and in OTM-45 method.
Ineris proposes this inter-laboratory comparison, covering only the analytical part, in order to give analytical laboratories the opportunity to comply with the requirement of the EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard to participate in an inter-laboratory comparison.
Levoglucosan, and its isomers (galactosan and mannosan) are recognised as a biomass combustion marker and can therefore be used to evaluate the sources of particulate matter (PM) in ambient air from the chemical characterisation of PM samples collected on filters. Although it is not compulsory, the European Directive (EU) 2004/2881, on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe, recommends measuring levoglucosan as part of the chemical composition of PM. The reference method CEN/TS 18044, related for the determination of the concentration of levoglucosan by chromatography, meets this objective.
To assess the performance of laboratories in implementing this recent dedicated standard, the French Central Air Quality Monitoring Laboratory (LCSQA) and the French National Institute for industrial Environment and Risks (Ineris) is offering this analytical interlaboratory comparison (ILC).
